My Ears Can Hardly Wait

RIJF artist lineup has been announced. Man, the selection looks tasty. The key question: shell out for the big acts (the Godfather of Soul, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter) or concentrate on the lesser known acts? Kilbourn Hall continues to house some great shows, such as Charlie Hunter on opening night, Kenny Garrett on closing night, plus Mose Allison and Cedar Walton in between.

Local artists of note include Jeff Campbell, Bob Sneider, and Bill Dobbins, among others.

As for the rest, I've only checked out three so far, but all are immediately on my list: BraamDeJoodeVatcher, e.s.t., and Papa Grows Funk.

In addition to the RIJF website, you can catch the latest festival news over at Jazz@Rochester.

Ken,

I although I haven't heard them live, I can vouch that the leader of Claudia Quintet is seriously talented and will give a very interesting performance. I wish we could get lineups like this in Boston.

Once again, I was on Ticketmaster site at 10:01 am, shelling out for a big act. Couldn't miss the chance to take my 12 year old to see "The Bob Father of Soul" (a little Rugrats humor for you).

Do you know anything about the Scandinavian trombonists, Sliding Hammers?

Hit me! I don't see how you can pass up the chance to see James Brown. I mean, seriously, he's a national treasure, funk personified.

Sliding Hammers have been through for the festival before. I missed them the first time, but they're obviously good enough to merit a return trip. They sound like just the ticket for a budding trombone virtuoso!
